چکیده

Research on adults’ face recognition abilities provides evidence for a distinctiveness effect such that distinctive faces are remembered better and more easily than typical faces. Research on this effect in the developmental literature is limited. In the current study, two experiments tested recognition memory for evidence of the distinctiveness effect. Study 1 tested infants (9and 10month olds) using a novelty preference paradigm. Infants were tested for immediate and delayed memory. Results indicated memory for only the most distinctive faces. Study 2 tested preschool children (3and 4-year-olds) using an interactive story. Children were tested with an implicit (i.e. surprise) memory test. Results indicated a memory advantage for distinctive faces by threeyear-old girls and four-year-old boys and girls. Contrary to traditional theories of changes in children’s processing strategies, experience is also a critical factor in the development of face recognition abilities.

Distinctive voices enhance the visual recognition of unfamiliar faces

Several studies have provided evidence in favour of a norm-based representation of faces in memory. However, such models have hitherto failed to take account of how other person-relevant information affects face recognition performance. Here we investigated whether distinctive or typical auditory stimuli affect the subsequent recognition of previously unfamiliar faces and whether the type of au...

Face distinctiveness in recognition across viewpoint: An analysis of the statistical structure of face spaces

We present an analysis of the eeects of face distinctiveness on the performance of a computational model of recognition over viewpoint change. In the rst stage of the model, the face stimulus is normalized by being mapped to an arbitrary standard view. In the second stage, the normalized stimulus is mapped into a \face space" spanned by a number of reference faces, and is classiied as familiar ...

Distinctiveness Effects in Face Memory Vanish with Well-Controlled Distractors

The “distinctiveness effect” in face memory holds that distinctive faces are recognized better than typical faces, as reflected by higher hit rates and lower false alarm rates during recognition tasks. We propose that this effect is due to a systematic bias in the similarity relationships between target and distractor faces. Specifically, we claim that distinctive faces are recognized more succ...

Recognizing distinctive faces: a hybrid-similarity exemplar model account.

In recognition memory experiments, Nosofsky and Zaki (2003) found that adding discrete distinctive features to continuous-dimension color stimuli helped participants to identify old items as old (the old-item distinctiveness effect), as well as to identify new items as new. The present study tests the extent to which these results generalize to the domain of face recognition. Two experiments we...

Reexamining the “Distinctiveness Effect”: Poorer Recognition of Distinctive Face Silhouettes

A recognition advantage for distinctive faces has been widely reported (e.g., Valentine, 1991). In such studies, distinctive faces produce more hits and fewer false alarms than typical faces. Although the finding is robust, the mechanism for this advantage has not been carefully explored. The choice of distractors in these studies does not guarantee equivalent target-distractor distances for ty...
